John C. Pemberton Autograph Field Pass Signed "J. C. Pemberton." One page, 7" x 9", "VBurg [Vicksburg]," July 1, 1863. Confederate General John C. Pemberton, three days before he surrendered the city of Vicksburg, penned this field pass authorizing Lieutenant Daniel S. Donelson to "...proceed with a guard to Mr. Clives house and search for corn & bacon reported to be in the house. If any is found he will place a guard over it with instructions to prevent anyone from using corn of bacon unless by orders from these Hd:Qrs!" Smoothed folds; light toning along the upper edge. Minor edge chipping.

Having withstood nearly two months of assault and siege by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and his Army of the Tennessee, Pemberton agreed to surrender with an offer of parole for all rebel soldiers, nearly 30,000 of them, captured. The surrender was finalized on July 4 and, with the surrender of Port Hudson five days later, the Federal army was solely in control of the Mississippi River, dividing the Confederacy in two.
