John C. Hays Treasury Warrant Signed. One partially printed page, 7.75" x 4.25", Austin, January 2, 1846. A pay warrant, No. 3429, issued to "John C. Hays" for $268.06 for "Surveying Land Scrip issued by Gov't in Bexar Co." Holographically cancelled, "X" and endorsed on the verso, "John C. Hays" in blue ink.

John Coffee "Jack" Hays moved to Texas in 1836 to join the Texas Revolution; he was assigned to the Texas Rangers. After the revolution, Hays' Ranger group became one of the first to successfully adopt the use of the Colt five-shot revolving-cylinder pistol in 1844, which changed the way Texas Rangers engaged Indians in battle. In the years of the Republic (1836-1845), Hays and his men defended Texas from Indians and Mexican troops. Hays was appointed to the position of deputy surveyor of Bexar District, and for a while shared the duties of soldier and surveyor.

Condition: Fine condition, small amounts of soiling from ink on verso, minimally affects Hays' endorsement signature.
