    John A. Dahlgren Letter Signed "J Dahlgren." One page of a bifolium, 7.75" x 10", Charleston Roads, South Carolina; September 18, 1864. Addressed to Acting Mas. Mate George H. Rexford of the U.S.S. Clover. The letter related orders for Rexford, which read: "You are hereby detached from the U.S.S. 'Clover', and on receipt of this; you will report without delay to Fleet Captain J.M. Bradford, for duty, on board the Flag Steamer 'Philadelphia.' Dahlgren signs the letter at the bottom as Rear Admiral Commanding of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron. With docketing on verso.

    Dahlgren (1809-1870), the "Father of American Naval Ordnance, took command of the all-important South Atlantic Blockading Squadron, which assisted in implementing Winfield Scott's brilliant "Anaconda Strategy" in 1863. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

    Condition: Flattened mail folds, with minor toning and soiling at folds on verso. Overall very good.
