Jefferson Davis Anti-Secessionist Autograph Quote With an Autograph Letter About a Jewish Officer. 1) Autograph Quotation Signed, as U.S. senator 1 page, 4.5" by 7", Portland, Maine, August 18, 1858; inscribed to Mrs. L.C. Manning. Traces of mounting on recto, not effecting text, else fine. In full: "Nature's diversity begets the necessity of dependence and enforces the law of harmony - why should there not be peace and good will among men." Davis' summered, and speechified, in Maine in the lead-up to the Civil War; this quote is most likely related to one of his three Portland addresses. 2) Autograph Letter Signed, as U.S. Secretary of War, 2 pages, recto and verso, 5" by 8", no place, August 23, 1855. To "Mrs. Mordecai", the wife of Major Alfred Mordecai - a southern Jew, soldier and engineer then with the Delafield Commission sent to the Crimea to study European military systems. In part: "...Next to yourself I believe your husband's absence fell most heavily upon me, and I gave him up to the good of the service and to the gratification of his professional zeal, hoping that he would see all that was desirable and then return 'as bees fly home.' Like yourself I am not advised of the route or time of departure from among the Norseman but have some hope that the Czar will smooth the path of their return." From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
