General James Ewell Stuart (1833-1864) was one of the most celebrated Confederate cavalry commanders and served with both Lee and Jackson. His death at the Battle of Yellow Tavern was a serious blow to the Southern cause. He married the love of his life, Flora Cooke, daughter of the Ft. Riley commander Colonel Philip St. George Cooke, in November 1855. Flora would be a loving and doting wife throughout their short marriage. Following his death, Flora Stuart wore black mourning attire for the rest of her life.

Condition: Stuart's clipped signature has ink bleed through from verso, but is still very clear and bold. Mrs. Stuart's letter has mail folds, edge toning, and minor foxing.
