    Description

    Jean-Baptise Donatien de Vimeur, Comte de Rochambeau Autograph Endorsement Signed. One page, 5.5" x 7", Calais; April 17, 1788. Rochambeau approves an officer's request for an extension of his leave. He writes the endorsement and signs "le cte. de Rochambeau" directly beneath the request. The Comte de Rochambeau came to the assistance of the American colonies in their war for independence in 1780, joining with Washington in the capture of Yorktown. He returned to France in 1783 and became the commander of the military district stationed at Calais. Despite being a supporter of the French Revolution when it began, he was imprisoned during the Reign of Terror and nearly lost his life.

    Condition: Lightly toned, usual mail folds, mounting remnants on verso, else fine.
