    Description

McPherson sgined payroll document for extra-duty at Corinth

James McPherson Signed Payroll as Brigadier General and Superintendent of Railroads. Oversized partly printed sheet, 17" x 11". Corinth, July 1862. At top: "We, the subscribers, hereby acknowledge to have received of Brig. Genl McPherson Supt RRds, Corps of Engineers, the sum set opposite our names, respectively, being in full for our services at Corinth as Extra Duty Men, during the month of July, 1862, having signed duplicate receipts." Below are listed 16 names, their occupation, days employed, and rate of pay. They have signed (seven with their mark), acknowledging receipt of payment. McPherson signs on the verso to certify that the payroll is correct, adding his rank.

McPherson served as Superintendent of Military Railroads for the District of West Tennessee for five critical months. He is credited with keeping the railroads open for Grant's forces, leading to Union victories at the Battle of Iuka and the Battle of Corinth. He received promotions to brigadier and major general, both in 1862, and was given command of the XVII Corps where he distinguished himself in the Vicksburg Campaign. His army was in the right wing of Sherman's army during the Atlanta Campaign and was killed at the Battle of Atlanta on July 22, 1864, the highest-ranking Union officer killed during the Civil War.

Together with a carte de visite of McPherson, a chest-up image, 2.5" x 4". No backstamp, with a pencil identification on verso.

Condition: Document has age-toning throughout, with a few stray stains and folds. McPherson's signature is large and bold. Tiny creases at some edges.
