    Description

James Longstreet: Gettysburg-Related Autograph Letter Signed. 2-page ALS written on both sides of a single 5.75" x 9.25" sheet of lined paper. Gainesville, Georgia, December 30, 1888, from Confederate General James Longstreet to Colonel W. M. Owen, commenting on a recently published pamphlet on North Carolina troops at the Battle of Gettysburg. Docketed by the recipient at the head of the first page. In part: "... The writer would have served his friends more wisely I think by remaining quiet, for he may provoke reply to their arrogance. I don't suppose that any one reflects in any wise upon the character or valor of the N. C. troops. I noticed long ago from our returns that they lost more men at Gettysburg than the troops of any other state but it will be difficult to convince... that they advanced to a point nearer the line of the enemy than any others..." The pamphlet referred to was likely W. R. Bond's "Pickett or Pettigrew?" Longstreet's comments are particularly insightful given his role as the commander of the Confederate center and that fateful charge. Vertical folds, two minor ink stains.
