James Longstreet Autograph Letter Thrice Signed "J Longstreet." Two pages, 6.5" x 8.5" (sight), "Hd. Qrs. Richmond," May 6, 1863, written on the last day of the Battle of Chancellorsville. Longstreet and his men missed the battle because they were laying the town of Suffolk, occupied with Union forces, under siege. The operation was a success and led to the capture of much needed provisions. The letter is divided into three parts. In the first he writes to one of his captains asking, in part: "What arms and ammunition do you need?" In the second he inquires as to the whereabouts of General John Bell Hood, in part: "Is Gen Hood in Petersburg. If he is [illegible] with him at the office of the operator that he may receive, there..." The third, in part: "That is every serviceable horse, in the City of Petersburg, also every saddle and bridle - advise on the result..." Matted and framed to an overall size of 9.5" x 15".

James Longstreet (1821 - 1904) was one of the foremost Confederate generals of the American Civil War, the principal subordinate to General Robert E. Lee, who called him his "Old War Horse." He served under Lee as a corps commander for many of the famous battles fought by the Army of Northern Virginia in the Eastern Theater, but also with Gen. Braxton Bragg in the Army of Tennessee in the Western Theater.
