    JEB Stuart Military Pass

James Ewell Brown "JEB" Stuart Autograph Military Pass Signed. One page, 7.75" x 5", "Head Quarters Cavalry Corps, Army of Northern Virginia," January 30, 1864, on Cavalry Corps letterhead. Jeb Stuart, the Virginian trusted as the eyes and ears of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, writes this military pass for the family of Dr. Grinman. Less than four months after writing this, Stuart was killed at the Battle of Yellow Tavern on May 12, 1864, when a Union private in retreat shot the mounted Cavalry Corps commander. The text and signature are bold, but ghosting occurs. Docketing on the reverse. Weaknesses at the folds and minor paper losses have been repaired and reinforced on the reverse. Mounting remnants also exist on the reverse. The document reads in full: "The pickets on the Rapidan will permit any member of Dr. Grinman's family who presents this, to pass across on the river & back till further orders. [Signed] J.E.B. Stuart. Major Genl Comdg."
