James Burd Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, 6.25" x 7.5", "Tinian" (Burd's estate near Middletown, Pennsylvania, along the Susquehanna River). James Burd had migrated to America in 1747. He helped build many forts across Pennsylvania which served as outposts to protect the colonists during the French and Indian War. During the Revolutionary War, he served as an American colonel in the Pennsylvania Militia during the Revolutionary War. In this letter, he writes to his father-in-law, Edward Shippen of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, concerning the English opinion of America and a recent horse-riding accident. The letter is toned with smoothed folds. With a small amount of paper loss (though no loss of text) due to the original opening of the seal. In part:

"I think they will have Reason by & by, for England, to alter their opinion of the Americans, But all the while this Experience will be dearly brought by the Nation, we are constantly longing for news from our Noble armey before Boston. I have got quite well of my Fall from my Horse, it was not the fault of the mare, the night was very Dark and she fell unto a Rut I think nigh three feet deep which Rendered it impossible for her to recover & what made it worse was coming down the steepest hill between John Harris's and this place."
