James A. Garfield: Autograph Letter Signed [ALS] Regarding General George Thomas Being the "Rock Of Chickamauga".
5" x 6.25" ALS, No date, No place. Incredible letter written by General, and future President, James Garfield about the battle field exploits of General George Thomas, and how he earned the moniker "Rock of Chickamauga". The letter reads in full: "While men shall read the history of battles, they will never fail to study and admire the work of Thomas during the afternoon. With but 25,000 men formed in a semicircle of which he was the center and soul, he successfully resisted, for more than five hours the repeated assaults of an army of 65,000 men flushed with victory and bent on his annihilation . He was indeed the "Rock of Chickamauga" against which the wild waves of battle dashed in vain. J.A. Garfield". General Thomas got this nickname by defending the Chickamauga Creek in northwestern Georgia in 1863. Future president James Garfield, a field officer for the Army of the Cumberland, visited Thomas during the battle, carrying orders from Rosecrans to retreat; when Thomas said he would have to stay behind to ensure the Army's safety, Garfield told Rosecrans that Thomas was "standing like a rock." After the battle he became widely known by the nickname , representing his determination to hold a vital position against strong odds. In 1864, he helped General William T. Sherman take Atlanta. Thomas also fought and won conflicts at Franklin and Nashville, Tennessee. The leadership of the "Rock of Chickamauga" often gave soldiers the courage to continue the struggle battle after battle. The letter has been tipped to a larger sheet, light age toning from previous framing. Garfield's writing is bold and dark. A fantastic Civil War letter.
