    J. W. Kaudle Scout Report to Captain Burton Before Battle of Ellis Bridge. One page, 7.75" x 7.5", [West Point, Mississippi]; [February 20, 1864]. The report is addressed to the Confederate Capt. James H. Burton and is written in pencil. It is docketed in ink on verso and reads: "Report of Scouts Rec'd at Columbus Feby. 20, 1864 at 10 1/2 PM." The letter reads in full: "The enemy occupied West Point late this evening before we reached there. Forest retreated from the place with out a fight in the direction of Starks ville. I understand from a Capt. Comdg Co in Col Forest Cond. that the entire force of Genl Forest was in the retreat. While others think Col. Forest and Chalmers are between West Point and Aberdeen. The Capt with whom I conversed was cut off with his Co and is now in camp between Waverly and West Point. He will send in tonight and will give me the benefit of his information which I will pass upon." Signed, "J.W. Kaudle."

The forces met the next morning with the Union force attacking with four dismounted companies before breaking off their assault and retreating back toward West Point. Forrest's forces pursued them to Okolona where another battle took place at Ivey Hill on the 22nd. The Confederates succeeded in stopping Smith from meeting up with Sherman and pushed him back into Tennessee.

Condition: Lightly toned along creases. Smoothed folds.
