    J. E. B. Stuart Document Signed as quartermaster. Two pages, 12.5" x 7.75", Fort Leavenworth [Kansas Territory], May 29, 1856. This document is an agreement between "Lieutenant James E. B. Stuart, 1st Cavalry Assistant Commissary of Subsistence" and "R. M. C. Gartin Of Liberty in Clay County in the State of Missouri" for delivery of "fresh Beef . . . from time to time" to the U.S. soldiers at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Many other details are included in this contract, which lasted for twelve months. Later during the Civil War, Stuart became famous as the eyes and ears of General Lee. Earlier in 1855, he transferred to the 1st Cavalry Regiment stationed at Fort Leavenworth, where he became the quartermaster. Toned with some weakness and separation along folds. Docketing on verso.
