    J. E. B. Stuart Autograph Field Pass Signed "J.E.B.Stuart." One page, 7.75" x 5", on "Head Quarters Cavalry Corps, Army of Northern Virginia" letterhead, n. p. [Virginia], January 30, 1864. One of the greatest cavalry commanders on either side during the war, James Ewell Brown Stuart was a flamboyant character who first tasted combat during the Indian Wars on the western plains and in the conflict known as Bleeding Kansas. He and his men were an important asset to the Army of Northern Virginia, functioning as the eyes and ears of General Robert E. Lee's army.

Here the General issues a field pass five months before his death at the Battle of Yellow Tavern on May 12. It reads, in full: "The pickets on the Rapidan will permit any member of Dr. [Andrew Glasnell] Grinnan's family who presents this, to pass across the river & back till further orders." The pass has sustained some damage, predominantly detachment along the folds, but has been silked on the verso for preservation. The signature of Stuart, while still bold and clear, as been affected slightly at the "a" in Stuart. The text is mirrored on the left from folding while the ink was wet, resulting in a mirrored signature. Some light staining along the first vertical fold at left and upper left corner; chipped edges.

The Army of Northern Virginia was camped near the Rapidan River when, one week later, February 6-7, a portion of the Army of Northern Virginia engaged a Federal force at a bend on the Rapidan at the Battle of Morton's Ford.
