Indian Scout "Whistling Bear" Discharge Signed By Major Marcus Reno and 1st Lieut. William W. Cooke. 8 3/8" x 10 7/8" Indian scout discharge for "Whistling Bear" after six months of service dated December 15th, 1875. Signed by both Major Marcus Reno and 1st Lieut. William W. Cooke (signed twice) at Fort Abraham Lincoln, Dakota Territory. The document is in good condition with some light aging and folds.

Reno is most noted for his prominent role in the Battle of the Little Bighorn, where he failed to support Custer's position on the battlefield, remaining in a defensive formation with his troops about four miles away. Cooke was killed during the battle, with his body being found close to his Custer's. Cooke wrote the "last message" to Frederick Benteen, carried by Sergeant John Martin, that read:

"Benteen. Come On. Big village. Be quick. Bring packs. WW Cooke. P.S. Bring Packs." A rare discharged. The Michael Ward Collection of Western Americana
