Indian Fighters Autograph Collection containing autographs of three noteworthy Indian fighters and Custer companions. 1). 4" x 2.5" autograph card "George Crook Maj. Gen. U.S. Army". Crook fought with Custer in the Northwest Campaign. 2). Blair Taylor, ADS, one page, 8.5" x 14", Fort Rice, September 30, 1878. Purchase abstract for 430 pounds of flour. Blair served under Custer in the 7th Cavalry during the campaign against the Souix indians. 3). Nelson Miles, TLS, one page, Washington D.C., Headquarters of the Army stationary, February 8, 1899. In part: "I am in receipt of your very kind invitation to be present at the Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Military Service Institution...other engagements render it impossible." Boldly signed "Nelson A. Miles". Miles served with distinction at Antietam, Fredricksburg, Chancelorsville, and Appomattox, and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery at Chancelorsville, and was made a major general at age 26 for his heroism at Spotsylvania. After the Civil War he defeated the Kiowa and the blood thirsty Comanches. He was affectionately referred to by Roosevelt as a "Brave Peacock". He cleaned up the northeast plains after Custer's stunning defeat at Little Bighorn and was unfortunately responsible, in part, for the vicious massacre of some 200 Indian women and children at Wounded Knee. Very fine. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
