    Description

    Howell Cobb Autograph Letter Signed, 2pp., 8" x 10", Macon, Jan. 8, 1866. Responding to a question about a current court case on the issue of fraud and indemnification bonds. Hinged along left margin. Together with five pre-war used covers addressed to Cobb (including one to his wife).

    More Information: In part: "... I am satisfied that the court have the power & ought to exercise it of putting parties applying to establish lost papers upon terms. The Legislature intended simply to expedite the proceedings, but not take away the protection which the courts extended to the other party against fraud. For my life I cannot see the hardship of requiring indemnification bonds. Lord Hendrick once said in substance, that the party 'who made most should risk most' and I think it was a remark full of wisdom..."
