    Description

Horatio Gates Discharge Document Signed. Two pages, 6" x 7.5", Ticonderoga, November 1, 1776. This discharge begins with John Potts signing and certifying that "David Humphrey Sergt. in Capt. Joseph Guild's Company of Col. John Greaton's Regt. is rendered unfit for further Service this Campagn [sic], by reason of a Hectical habit of body, and is hereby recommended for a Discharge." Next, Major Jotham Loving signs a statement certifying that he is "convinced that the complaint of David Humphrey is not fictitious". Following Major Loving's statement, Humphrey himself signs an acknowledgment that he has "Received all my pay and Arears." Lastly, Horatio Gates signs below the statement that Humphrey "is for the Reasons here mentioned Discharged from the Service of the United States of America."

In 1775, Horatio Gates, a British soldier, offered his services to the Continental Congress. By the time this letter was written, he was serving as a major general in command of the Northern Department. Several months before this discharge was signed, though, Gates had retreated southward out of Canada, abandoning Fort Crown Point on Lake Champlain. That move was unfavorably viewed by many, including General Washington; as a result, Gates was later censured and demoted. He signs this discharge at Ticonderoga, a fort seventeen miles south of Fort Crown Point and the sight of an important siege later in July 1777. Toned with foxing. A small hole at the fold intersections and a weakened fold have been repaired.
