    Henry Halleck Autograph Letter Signed "H. W. Halleck." Two pages, 7.75" x 9.75", on Department of the Missouri letterhead, St. Louis, December 4, 1861, to General Lorenzo Thomas regarding an appointment that could prove embarrassing to the president: "Capt Hoskin was not anounced [sic] in Genl orders as Aide...there was an agreement that his services in that capacity were to be gratuitous until the President acted on his nomination...My action in this matter, could not possible if properly understood, have placed the President in an embarrassing position in regard to my (your)self!" Smoothed folds with light toning along the edges. Fine.
