The document, addressed to the Fairfield County Superior Court and possibly concerning events during the French and Indian War, reads on the recto:

"Please to pay Wm. Saml. Johnson Esq. & Kings Attorney Twenty One Pounds Seventeen Shillings and 9d. Being a Bill of Cost allowed on Information against Henry Tomet & Saml. Cheree two Indians for high Crimes exclusive of the Clerk's Fees which was Ten Shillings more.

    The verso reads:

    "Mr. Treas[urer],

Silliman, a Connecticut lawyer, later became a brigadier general and a hero of the Revolutionary War after a British invasion of Connecticut in 1777. One year before signing this document, William Samuel Johnson, a future signer of the Constitution, served as a delegate to the Stamp Act Congress held in New York City. He later represented Connecticut in the Continental Congress and then in the U.S. Senate. He was the first president of Columbia College from 1787-1800. This document is on toned paper (slightly darker toning in right margin of verso).
