George Pickett Autograph Letter Signed "George" in pencil to his young bride, Sallie. Two pages (front/back of same sheet), 8" x 10", n.p., [August] 8, [1864], referring to General Lee. The Confederate general responds to a letter from his wife in part:

"Your two lines by Jackerie [a slave] did me a great deal of good my own darling wife. . . . I saw Capt Edmonds this morning who says there will be no trouble about getting the rooms and twill afford him much pleasure, likewise his wife to have you at her table. If Mass Robt. will only leave us but I have my doubts-Things look something like an advance in another direction. Darling one I do pray you are not suffering from this intense heat we must all 'suffer some,' but thank God you have not the flies conjointly-You can form no idea of the numbers, and their tenacity in this region, man & beast are nearly crazy. Bye Bye my own Sallie love. . . . Your own George." "Mass Robt" is a slang reference to "Master Robert," or General Robert E. Lee. Pickett alludes to "an advance in another direction" by the Confederate army. "The baby" is a reference to their first child born earlier in July.

Pickett's division was part of the 1st Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia during the Petersburg Campaign. Just nine days earlier, the Army, under the command of General Lee, defeated the Union at the Battle of the Crater. Weaknesses at the folds have been reinforced with tape. Small holes exist at the intersections of folds. Light soiling and chipping along the edges. The penciled text is light in places.
