    Description

George Patton Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, penned on recto and verso on "Mounted Service School" letterhead, 5.5" x 7", Fort Riley, Kansas, January 19, 1913. Following graduation from the U.S. Military Academy in 1909, Patton participated in the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm in the first modern pentathlon. He finished fifth overall. He then traveled with his wife and daughter, seeking to study with the greatest swordsman in Europe. Upon his return to the States, Patton became an instructor at the Mounted Service School where he was named the Army's youngest-ever "Master of the Sword." During this time, Patton improved and modernized the Army's cavalry saber fencing techniques.

Here, Patton sends a newsy letter to his "Dear Papa," which reads, in part: "I saw by the paper that is has been cold in California. I hope it has not frozen the oranges again. It is really delightful here. I went hunting today and it was too hot for the leather coat I was wearing." He goes on to mention that "I have revised the drill regulations . . . though at this time of year there is nothing to do except work, and I don't find time for that. Here it seems 'Just one damned thing after another.'" Letter gives wonderful insight to the young Patton's affection for his father, as well as marking the beginning of his impressive military career. Faint age toning, small area of fold separation. Boldly penned and fine.
