    Description

George H. Thomas Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages of a bifolium, 7.75" x 9.75", Headquarters, Department of the Cumberland, Louisville, Kentucky; November 11, 1867. A letter from General Thomas to Major General Thomas J. Wood concerning a bronze medal, struck by the State of Tennessee, he is forwarding to him for his role in the victory over the Confederate army at the Battle of Nashville. This is likely a retained draft, as there are several emendations made in Thomas's hand; additionally, there is a notation in pencil made at the end of the letter that copies be made for "Gen Schofield / Gen. A.J. Smith / Genl Jas H Wilson / Genl Jas. B Steedman"; all four officers along with Wood served under Thomas at Nashville.
Condition: The letter has one horizontal fold, and slight staining along left margin. Rust paper clip stain on verso.

    Full transcript of letter:

    General,

The Legislature of the State of Tennessee, by Joint Resolution, ordered a Gold Medal to be struck commemorative of the great victory gained over the Rebel Forces, by the Union Forces under my command at Nashville on the 15th and 16th December 1864, which medal was presented to me by His Excellency William G. Brownlow, Governor of the State in the presence of the members of the Legislature on the 15th December 1865, on which occasion he spoke in the most complimentary manner of the important service rendered to the country, as well as the gallantry displayed, by the command on the day of the Battle of Nashville and the succeeding days of the pursuit of the defeated Enemy.

Bronze copies were also ordered to be struck for presentation to each of the Corps Commanders particularly in the Battle. These medals having been received by me for distribution I avail myself of the occasion in forwarding yours to thank you again most heartily for the very important service rendered the country by yourself and your command on that most critical occasion.

    I am General

    Very Respectfully

    Your obt. svt.

    Geo. H. Thomas

    Maj. Genl. U.S.A.
