    Description

Custer directs that his dispatch "be regarded as confidential"

George Custer Autograph Letter Signed "G. A. Custer", 7.75" x 9.75", May 10, [1868]. Following the Civil War, Custer remained with the army in the mid-west and took part in the wars against the Plains Indians.

Six months into a yearlong suspension by court martial, Custer's letter is addressed to the "Operator in Hays City: This dispatch is to be sent to be collected in Chicago as O.B. I desire it to be regarded as confidential and not copied where liable to be seen by any person in the military service except myself and the person receiving the dispatch." Ink is legible but has smudged ink blots around "City" and "person". Age toned with minor wear along smoothed creases. Framed and matted with a picture of Custer to an overall size of 25" x 19".

In fall of 1867, Custer abandoned his post in Fort Wallace, Kansas without authority. Evidence supports he was either leaving to gather more supplies for Fort Wallace or to visit his wife at a nearby camp. Along with charges of document forging, he was charged with absence without leave and found guilty. On November 20, 1867, he was suspended from rank and command without pay for one year. Around September 24th, Custer's suspension was remitted by Lt. Gen. William T. Sherman at the request of Custer's longtime friend, General Sheridan, who was heading the Department of Missouri and organizing a winter campaign against the plains Indians.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
