    Description

    George Bomford Letter Signed. Two pages, 7.75" x 9.5", Washington D.C.; July 13, 1824. Addressed to James Hamilton, Jr., a Congressman from South Carolina. The letter is regarding a military appointment. It reads in part: "Your letter of the 11th to Mr. Secretary of War recommending Mr. De Viellers for the appointment of Mil. S. Keeper at Savannah, has been referred to this Department. Such, I am instructed by Mr Secretary to inform you, in reply, that no successor to Maj. McCall will be appointed..." Signed, "G. Bomford Lt. Col."

    George Bomford (1780-1848) was an American Army officer. He was also an inventor and designer of weapons and defensive installations. He developed the Columbiad, one of the first heavy coastal defense guns, and served as the second Chief of Ordnance from 1832-1848.

    Condition: 1" open tear to bottom right crease. Light chipping along left side. Four small sections of tape to top verso. One hole from ink burn. Lightly rubbed with smoothed folds.
