George Armstrong Custer: An Outstanding March 29, 1869 Signed Letter Recommending a "good Indian" Who Had "participated in the battle of the 'Washita.'" This letter was written for Custer by an aide, an Custer as Brevet Major General U.S.A. and filled in the Indian's name, "Trotter (Ses-sa)." The letter, written from "South of the Arkansas, Camp Supply," identifies the bearer as "an Osage Warrior. He accompanied by command on the late winter's campaign and marches, and participated in the battle of the 'Washita.'" Custer goes on to give the man his personal endorsement: "I believe him to be a good Indian, and a valuable scout and trailer."

Written on lined 8" x 9.75" paper, the letter has been professionally backed with almost invisible rice paper to reinforce weaknesses along the old fold lines. Minor light soiling, but in surprisingly good shape considering that the "good Indian" undoubtedly carried the letter on his person wherever he went.
