    George Armstrong Custer: An Important Archive of James Nolan, Sergeant Who Served with Custer, Including Custer Signed Documents. Over 60 items-original letters and documents, photographs, and newspaper clippings-regarding this career trooper. A complete inventory may be found with the website description of this lot, but among the highlights:

    1. 1873 Fort Abraham Lincoln recommendation of Nolan, signed by W. P. Carlin.
    2. 1874 discharge paper signed by Custer, with notations on verso that Nolan participated in the Yellowstone Expedition and skirmishes with the Indians near Fort Lincoln.
    3. 1874 Re-enlistment papers
    4. 1875 application for post of Quarter Master Sergeant at Fort Lincoln, with endorsement signed by Custer.
    5. 1877 request by Elwell Otis that Nolan be appointed Sgt. Major at Fort Yates, Dakota Territory.
    6. Nolan's 1879 discharge signed by W. P. Carlin.
    7. Appointment signed by Colonel John Gibbon, whose column relieved Reno and Benteen at Little Big Horn.
    8. Photos of soldiers at Fort Laramie, c. 1884
    9. 1931 typed manuscript by Nolan's widow, with details of his service in Dakota Territory.
    10. 19th century engraving of Custer from a Brady photo.
