George Armstrong Custer: A Rare Imprinted Mathew Brady Carte de Visite, Boldly Autographed in Ink by Custer on Verso. While best remembered for his tragic death in 1876 at Little Bighorn, Custer was also one of the most celebrated and controversial Union officers during the Civil War. He overcame a lackluster academic career by demonstrating daring and brilliance, which led him to a brigadier general's appointment in 1863 at the age of 24! The young general commanded a division in the Shenandoah which cut off Lee's retreat, and Custer was a prominent presence at the Appomattox surrender. He sat for several photographs in Brady's Washington, DC studio, including the one which graces this CDV. It shows him in major general's uniform, probably taken in 1866 or 1867. Signed in ink with his rank on reverse. The photograph has been professionally cleaned and has had some subtle professional restoration, resulting in a fine display presence. Slight haloing effect on the Brady imprint and a few letters of Custer's handwriting. His signed photograph is the most highly valued among any of the Union's Civil War luminaries. 2.375" x 4".
