George Armstrong Custer: A Handwritten 1868 Cover Letter for an August 10th Confidential Dispatch. At this time Custer and the 7th were operating in the Kansas theater. In November they would attack and kill Black Kettle in his camp on the Washita River. The rather cryptic note reads in full: "To Operations in Hays City/ This dispatch is to be sent to be collected in Chicago as O.B. I desire it to be regarded as confidential and not copied when liable to be seen by any person in the Military except myself and the person receiving the dispatch./ G. Custer/ Brig."

Except for some slight bleeding of the ink and a little general aging, the letter is in very good condition. On the bottom half of the letter in very light pencil is a guarantee of authenticity by someone named Foster, which doubtless long predates the era when monetary value was a consideration, 7.5" x 9.75", elegantly framed to 24.5" x 18".

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
