George Armstrong Custer: A Fine, Bold Signature on a Well-Documented 1864 Train Muster. Dated March 28-30, the list of signatures are from various individuals who traveled to Washington for a special reception honoring General Grant. The document is accompanied by a copy of The Custer Story, which contains a chronological presentation of correspondence relating to Custer. In a March 28, 1864, letter his wife Elizabeth, who accompanied him on the trip, wrote a detailed report of the event in a letter to her parents. She was impressed at the attention her husband received from dignitaries including congressmen, senators, and even President Lincoln, greeting Custer as a hero and the youngest general in the Army. Libbie describes being invited to dance by "Senator W," who was, in fact, Senator Henry O. Went, whose signature also appears in this roster.

The document measures 6.25" x 9.5" and is in very good condition overall, with an especially strong Custer signature. Punch hole, edge roughness on left side and scattered small stains and soil marks do not detract badly. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from James Spence.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
