General Winfield Scott Hancock- Five Autograph Letters Signed "Winfd Scott". An amazing collection of five letters written and signed by this legendary Civil War general and presidential candidate of whom Ulysses S. Grant once said, "Hancock stands the most conspicuous figure of all the general officers who did not exercise a separate command. He commanded a corps longer than any other one, and his name was never mentioned as having committed in battle a blunder for which he was responsible."

Letter one: four pages, 5" x 8", Governor's Island letterhead, January 15, 1881, to Congressman S. S. Cox (of Ohio). Asking for assistance in getting a sea-wall built around the island, in part: "Governor's Island lies in the 'jaws' of the two rivers- and the object of the Sea-Wall is sanitary...The filth from the two rivers is precipitated upon this island, now. With a Sea-wall, it would pass by instead of gathering upon the rocks..." Fine condition with mailing folds.

Letter two: four pages, 5.5" x 8.25", Governor's Island, March 6, 1882, also to Congressman Cox. Another letter regarding the Sea-wall project. Very good condition with mailing folds and light soiling.

Letter three: one page, 5" x 8", St. Paul, April 4, 1870, to Colonel Robert Campbell. Asks for confirmation of receipt of recent letter. Very good condition with folds and some ink smearing.

Letter four: one page, 5.5" x 8.25", np, nd (9:10 a.m.), to Mr. Bader. In full: "Will you let me look at your cards from the Aztec Dinner. I will send them right back." Fine condition with folds, mounted by integral blank leaf to larger sheet.

Letter five: one page, 5.5" x 8.5", Governor's Island letterhead, January 31, 1882, to William A. Moore. An acknowledgement of receipt of a note. Fine condition with light folds and mounting traces on verso of blank integral leaf. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
