General William Tecumseh Sherman: Post-war Autograph Letter Signed. 8" x 10.5" ALS on two sides of a single lined sheet of writing paper, New York, May 31, 1888, signed "W. T. Sherman". The celebrated and controversial Union general writes to Col. A. H. Markland at the Clarendon Hotel in Washington, D.C. Sherman talks about the recent death of a wartime colleague. "The Colonel during our war was always a messenger of joy to us all for we knew that he was the Bearer of news from home. At Memphis, Vicksburg, Nashville and especially at Savannah he seemed to anticipate our movements and arrive almost to the day with us bearing the previous mails carefully assorted and promptly distributed... May heavens... blessings attend you in the time left you alone in this selfish world and be assured that so long as a single man of the Army of the Tennessee remains you will have a fiend and admirer." Absalom Markland was a Special Agent in the Post Office Department assigned to assist General U. S. Grant. He formed a close friendship with both Grant and Sherman. We are also selling a letter sent by Grant to Markland, making a gift of the saddle he used at Fort Donelson. In the post-war years, Sherman occupied his time going to the theater, banquets, veterans reunions, and writing letters dealing with the war and his colleagues.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
