    General Thomas A. Smyth Document Signed with Civil War-Period Carte de Visite. Two items, as follows: (1) A one page partly printed vellum document filled in by hand, 7.75" x 9.75", Hatcher's Run, Virginia, February 9, 1865, a discharge of surgeon Brower Gesner from the 10th Regiment NY Vols. Signed at lower right beneath a glowing character reference "Tho. A Smyth/ Brig Gen Vol..." (2) A head and shoulders portrait in uniform with an ink ID beneath, a Wm. H. Curry backmark (Wilmington, Delaware), and a 2¢ tax stamp on verso. Smyth enlisted in the 24th Pennsylvania, an Irish-American regiment, in 1861 and made captain. He was later commissioned as a major in the 1st Delaware and commanded the 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division of the II Corps at Gettysburg where he was wounded. He recovered but was later mortally wounded at Farmville and died on April 9, 1865, the last Union general killed in the war. Very fine.
