General Sir Henry Clinton Document Signed "H. Clinton". One page, partially printed, 8" x 12.75", New York, September 1, 1781. With this document, Henry Clinton, "General and Commander in Chief of all His Majesty's Forces, within the Colonies laying on the Atlantic Ocean, from Nova-Scotia to West-Florida, inclusive," directs Deputy Paymaster General David Thomas to pay "Captain John McPherson of His Majesty's 82d Regiment . . . the Sum of Fifty Two Pounds, Seven Shillings and Two Pence Sterling, Being Subsistence for the Convalescents left by the foresaid Regiment at New York."

In mid-1779, British General Clinton began assembling a large contingent with which he planned to invade South Carolina. Clinton took personal command of this campaign and his task force of 14,000 men sailed south from New York at the end of the year. By early 1780, Clinton had brought Charleston under siege and by May had forced the surrender of the city in a serious defeat for the rebel cause. Clinton continued to oversee the southern campaign from New York. After the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown he returned to England.

Condition: Light uniform toning with old, smoothed fold creases, otherwise excellent.
