General Juan Alvarez Autograph Letter Concerning the Statehood of Guerrero Signed "J. Alvarez". Two pages, 8.25" x 10.5", Guerrero, Mexico, May 29, 1849, to Mexican Senator (and later President) Ignacio Comonfort expressing thanks for his efforts in helping Guerrero become a Mexican state. Alvarez also writes of his pleasure with the progress made by Comonfort and Juan Almonte, a Mexican soldier and diplomat. Because of their help, Alvarez hopes for great benefits for the residents of the territory. Later in October 1849, Guerrero was officially made a state and Alvarez was chosen as interim governor. He was elected governor in 1850 and served a three year term. When he left office, he and Comonfort revolted against the dictatorship of Santa Anna, who was soon exiled as a result. After that, Alvarez was chosen to serve as the interim president of the Mexican Republic. He served for 68 days in 1855. Comonfort served as the next president from 1855 to 1858. Alvarez was a veteran of the Mexican War of Independence, the Pastry War, the Mexican-American War, and later, the War of the Reform and the war against the French Intervention. He was a federalist and liberal reformer. This rare piece, written on blue paper, has a 1.25" x 1.75" fragment missing from the last page, just below the postmark, and a tear on the same page along the red seal; no text is affected. Fine condition. From the Taking of Texas Collection.Auction Info
