    Description

General Joseph Hooker Autograph Letter Signed and Two Signatures. First, the letter: signed "J. Hooker Maj. Genl", four pages, 5" x 8", Astor House letterhead, [New York], October 4, 1873, to General H(enry) M. Cist. Concerns errors in the printed account of a speech he made at Literary Hall in Pittsburgh, in part: "...such a botch was made of it...This is not the first time the [Army and Navy] Journal has wilfully misquoted me and no doubt designedly..." He refers several times to Ward and Sheridan about whom he says: "...It is only charitable to suppose that he didn't know what he was talking about..." Fine condition with light folds and a couple of tiny minor stains. Originally purchased from Walter R. Benjamin Autographs.

One of the two Signatures is signed "J. Hooker Maj. Genl" on a 3.75" x 1.5" slip laid down to an album page and is in fine condition. The other is signed "Joseph Hooker Maj Gnl" on a lined sheet laid down to a small card 3.5" x 1.5", very good condition with light soiling.

To round out this impressive lot, a group of vintage clippings and two nice engravings of Hooker. These portraits would be excellent for matting with these signatures. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
