    Description

General Joseph E. Johnston Signature and Photograph "J.E. Johnston". Clipped signature, 2.5" x .75", np, nd. Confederate brigadier general who surrendered after Lee signs his signature here in bold, brown ink, and comes complete with a rare CDV by James S. Waters of Baltimore. The CDV measures 2.5" x 3.75", and both pieces are mounted on an 8" x 11" black sheet of backing paper. The clipped signature includes an inscription: "Your prosperity. Yours very truly". The CDV is a sepia-toned oval portrait framed in brown. The pair are a perfect candidate for display. Johnston was a West Point graduate and joined the Confederate forces in 1861. Jefferson Davis relieved Johnston of duty in 1864 for failing to stem the Union advance. In 1865, he was restored to his previous rank. On April 26, 1865, General Johnston surrendered his army to General Sherman, a few weeks after Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox. Johnston's surrender virtually closed the Civil War. He was elected to Congress in 1877 and 1885 and died in 1891 after catching a cold while serving as a pallbearer at General Sherman's funeral. The signature and CDV are in very fine condition, with some slight loss of the emulsion present on the dark background of the photo.
