General James Longstreet Autograph Letter Signed as a Major and Pay Master in the United States Army five days after the beginning of the Civil War. One page, 8" x 10", on blue, lined paper, Albuquerque, April 17, 1861, to Major Reynolds, Pay Master, regarding his possible resignation. He says in full:

"Your favor of the 14th is at hand. The Quartermaster here tells me there is no chance of my getting any transportation for my escort to Stanton or Fauntleroy for some time. So I return your checks. If I do not go home I will in all probability get news of my deposit of forty thousand by the time I can get transportation. My letters by the east mail call me home and I cannot at present see that I can do otherwise than go. If Capt. Seward is appointed Pay Master and assigned to duty in this Department I hope that I may be able to get a leave long enough to take my family home. If I cannot I see no hope but to resign at once. My family is so situated that I cannot well send them home without me."

Six weeks after the writing of this letter, Major James Longstreet resigned his commission and joined the Confederate army as a Lieutenant Colonel, eventually rising to the rank of Lieutenant General. Slight toning on the left edge; normal folds. Very fine.
