    Description

General Howell Cobb Autograph Letter Signed "Howell Cobb Maj Genl." Two pages of a bifolium, 7.5" x 9.5", Atlanta; October 13, 1863. Addressed to Brigadier General W.W. Mackall, regarding events around Rome, Georgia. In part: "This letter will be handed to you by Captain Laler. He has been engaged, at the insistence of the citizens of Rome, GA, in preparing the defenses in that neighborhood & has a mass with him, which he will submit to you with a statement of the progress that has been made in the completion of the works around Rome. Brig Gen H R Jackson, now in command of the forces I have sent forward to that point, reports to me that upon an examination of the works, he regards them as well adapted to the objects of which they were enacted and strongly recommended their completion & extension...If these works are to be completed I should remark, that I have no forces at my command, & must look to the General to supply the necessary means." With docketing on verso.

Howell Cobb (1815-1868) served five terms in the U.S. House, as secretary of the treasury under President Buchanan, and as governor of Georgia. He became one of the founders of the Confederacy and later served as a major general in the Confederate Army.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
