General George G. Meade: Autograph Letter signed (ALS).
War date ALS, 2 pp., 5" x 8", September 11, 1864, Head Quarters Army of the Potomac. While in the thick of the Richmond Petersburg Campaign, Meade writes to his friend John Cadwalader, thanking him for the gift of "segars", in part: "I wish you would persuade (Henry A.) Cram to join you, in an excursion to the Army....the journey is a very pleasant one by way of Baltimore and Ft. Monroe and you will be interested & pleased with what we can show you....Cram previewed to come as soon as we were in Richmond, but as that ....seems to be somewhat delayed, I think you and he had better have a preliminary visit whilst we are in the front of Petersburgh....Geo. G. Meade". In September 1864 Union troops were involved in the siege of Petersburg, which ended six months later with the Confederate surrender of both Petersburg and Richmond. A fine war date letter.
