    Description

Gaspar López Document Signed. Three pages of a bifolium, 6" x 8.25", Monterey, August 4, 1821, in Spanish. Gaspar López served as the commandant general of the Eastern Internal Provinces a few months after Agustín de Iturbide fought against Spanish rule and proclaimed the new Mexican empire. Here, López orders the formation of a national militia. López's signature is slightly faded. Light dampstaining, otherwise, mostly clean. Translated in part:

"One of the matters at hand which has taken my attention after having received interim command of these provinces is the formation of the nation militia in all the towns of the territory, as much because the troops' object is the security of the people and property of inhabitants. . . . When troops are called away there must be a force to keep internal order in each town."

This was sent around to the chain of presidios, and each person who received it signed and sent it on the next. In 1821, López also granted Moses Austin's colonization petition, thus opening the door of Anglo-American colonization of Texas.
