    Description

Francis M. Cockrell Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages on U.S. Senate Chamber letterhead, 7.25" x 9.5", Washington, D.C.; May 19, 1882. Francis M. Cockrell, a former Confederate commander, was a United States Senator from Missouri, who served for five terms. Writing Missouri Governor Thomas C. Reynolds (also a former Confederate), Cockrell discusses the potential passing of "the Court of Appeals bill" and the potential appointment of Democratic judges. In part: "It is uncertain when the bill will pass the House. It will be time when it passes the House to see the President. I have not conversed with Senator Vest in regard to any appointees and prefer at this time not to open the question to any one. I shall, if the bill becomes a law, do all I can to secure a fair share of these places for Democrats and see no reason why Confederates should be excluded. I incline to the belief that Pres. Arthur will distribute the Democratic Appointees to different parts of the country so as to make a fair proportion of Democrats in each of the Court of Appeals..."

Condition: The document is housed in sealed Mylar, which can be removed. With mail folds, partial separations along horizontal folds; does not affect much of the text. Light toning, wear, and soiling.
