    More Information:

Ely Samuel Parker (1828-1895) was a Seneca Indian who, as a lieutenant colonel in the Union army, served as adjutant and military secretary to Ulysses S. Grant. In that capacity, he penned most of Grant's correspondence, including the final draft of the terms of Lee's surrender. He was one of two American Indians to reach the rank of general during the war (the other being Confederate General Stand Watie) and served as Commissioner of Indian Affairs during Grant's presidency.
