Ely S. Parker Autograph Letter Signed "E. S. Parker." One page, 7.75" x 10", Washington, February 7, 1866. Written to an unknown general, Parker is apologizing for not attending a local function, in part: "I should have been most happy to have had the honor of representing the 'Soldiers Legion' of Galena..." The explains his absence and relates that he was on official duty, "...on a military mission to our erring brethren of the South during the whole month of Jany...I visited Ky. Tenn. Ala & Miss, & you can easily imagine how, in the present condition of the South, this was no easy job." A short postscript appears on the verso with a secondary signature simply reading "Parker." Toned along the folds and edges. Parker's signature is smudged somewhat. Slight separation of the folds at the right edge.

    More Information:

Ely Samuel Parker (1828-1895) was a Seneca Indian who, as a lieutenant colonel in the Union army, served as adjutant and military secretary to Ulysses S. Grant. In that capacity, he penned most of Grant's correspondence, including the final draft of the terms of Lee's surrender. He was one of two American Indians to reach the rank of general during the war (the other being Confederate General Stand Watie) and served as Commissioner of Indian Affairs during Grant's presidency.
