    Ely S. Parker Autograph Letter Signed "E. S. Parker." One page, 5' x 8", on Department of the Interior Office of Indian Affairs letterhead, Washington, June 15, 1870, to General J. C. Smith forwarding " you, sixth volume of the edition of Schoolcrafts History of Indian Tribes in the United States; this is the only volume now in possession of this Office, but it forms a compendium of the preceding volumes which are entirely exhausted." Smoothed folds. Lightly toned along the edges.

    Ely Samuel Parker (1828-1895) was a Seneca Indian who, as a lieutenant colonel in the Union army, served as adjutant and military secretary to Ulysses S. Grant. Between the years 1869 and 1871, Grant, as president, appointed Parker as Commissioner of Indian Affairs. He was the first American Indian to hold the position. While serving as commissioner, Parker was instrumental in formulating Grant's Peace Plan with the natives and was partly responsible for the reduction of military engagements with Indians on the frontier.
