    Description

    Edward Hand Autograph Letter Signed "Edw: Hand." One page, 5.75" x 4.5", Lancaster [Pennsylvania], July 22, 1799. Writing to men whom he is apparently indebted to, Hand writes, in part: "I am sorry you have been sol long unpaid. I am at a loss how to convey the money. Will you, or can you, conveniently draw on me here for the Amt. or instruct me how to send it to you." Mounting remnants along the verso of the left edge. Scattered foxing.

    Edward Hand (1744-1802) served in the Continental Army, rising to the rank of general and serving as adjutant general of the army during the Siege of Yorktown. Following the war, he entered politics, but, fearing an impending war with France, was commissioned a major general in the in United States Army by President George Washington in 1798.
