    Description

Early U.S. Naval Hero Stephen Decatur Clipped Signature, "Navy Comm'ry Off Stephen Decatur," 2.5" x 1". Toned paper, affixed to old collector's card. Good condition. Stephen Decatur (1779 - 1820) was perhaps the first post-revolutionary military hero universally idolized by the American people. His exploits against the Barbary Pirates and later, the British, earned him adulation and...rapid promotion. Unfortunately, this brave and talented officer squandered his life in a duel with colleague, Commodore James Barron.
