    Description

Dorothea Dix Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 5.25" x 6.5", n.p., n.d. Although undated, this letter may be from the Civil War period during which time Dix was Superintendent of Women Nurses in the Union Army and often wrote letters on the character of the nurses under her command. In full: "The woman Mrs. Parker whom you commended to me earnestly for service, proves to be a person of basest character. She married a second husband while the first was living from whom she was not ever divorced, & lived with a third to whom she is not married at all & this is not the end of a bad story." With a postscript on the integral page: "Are you likely to get Mrs. Freeman's pay: I am sure she should not lose it." Dix was always careful to appoint women, whom she believed to be respectable, mature, and competent in order to avoid scrutiny. Flattened folds with a few areas of staining.
