Daniel Sickles Autograph Letter Signed, "D Sickles", three pages, 4.5" x 6.75", New York, October 16, 1902 to General King concerning his declining health and other matters including a mention of "Lincoln's Prayer." He writes in part: "I shall be very glad to meet with your friend, the clerique [sic], and later on, when I am rested, I will relate the incident of 'Lincoln's Prayer' - although not from a pulpit! I fear the devil would laugh to see such an old sinner as I am in a sacred place..." Sickles notes to King that he was "...writing this at five A.M. - having been up all night- tortured by pain - a fearful attack of Neuralgia, brought on by a debility and Exhaustion - the results of our dissipations at Gettysburg and Washington recently. I am really trying to rest - so as to be fit to Celebrate my birthday next Monday, - and to Continue the festivities until the End of the Month. When one gets well advanced in the Seventies one is Entitled to Eleven days for a birthday Jamboree, - a Continuous performance, like a Chinese play - with occasional adjournments and recesses for refreshments..." One horizontal crease, mounting remnants on verso of last page, else fine condition. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
